About CDCare
For most Nigerians, the dream of a better life is tangible. It’s the comfort of an ergonomic chair for your home office, or the new rechargeable fan that makes you have a nice night’s rest. It’s the new phone that could launch your career as a content creator, the modern appliances that could transform your salon, or the washing machine that finally ends your years-long struggle washing with your hands. While each of these represents a significant step forward, they often come with a heavy financial burden that makes them just out of reach.
CDcare was founded in 2020 with a unique business model: “Save Now, Pay Later” built on a simple insight that most Nigerians would rather save to own than borrow to buy. For five years and counting, CDcare has been making ownership of phones, laptops, home appliances, and even cars more accessible for thousands of Nigerians by blending savings culture with flexible, interest-free instalment payments so they own the things they need without falling into debt.
The Challenge
CDcare’s business model relies heavily on consistent, automated payments, whether a customer is saving ₦130,000 for a smartphone or ₦13 million for a brand-new car. As a result, the company understands that verifying customers are who they say they are – liveliness, and where they say they are – location, are not enough; they need to be able to automate scheduled payments for them via tokenization. Think of this as an ajo/esusu— a decades-long saving method that involves consistent contributions, trusted by many Nigerians, running on technology.
Getting this right is particularly important to ensure steady cash flow by reducing default rates and increasing the success of payments. This is especially relevant for customers living or working in areas with limited internet access who rely on automation to keep their savings plans running smoothly. It was a concern CDcare needed to address as they expanded their offerings to include higher-value items like cars.
The Solution
- Payment Collections and Recurring Payment Tokenisation
- Payouts to Merchants
Already using Flutterwave for its payment collection right from its launch in 2020, CDcare requested and got our tokenized payment infrastructure to support their business growth. This process protects sensitive payment information of CDcare customers, like card numbers, by replacing them with randomly generated unique characters called tokens, which cannot be used by unauthorized individuals.
With this integration, CDcare automated recurring direct debit collections across tens of thousands of customer accounts, allowing customers to set and forget their saving plans with confidence. Once customers reach the 50% mark of their saving targets for the selected item, CDcare ships it to them, no loans, no debt, no stress. This collaboration does more than make appliances accessible to thousands of Nigerians; it builds trust with them, encourages and supports long-term financial planning and responsibility.
The Outcome
With Flutterwave’s infrastructure powering its core payment operations, CDcare has been able to scale without sacrificing reliability. The company has processed over twenty billion naira*, almost evenly divided between collections from customers and payouts to merchants. This near-perfect match reflects what is possible when innovation, such as CDcare’s “Save Now, Pay Later” model, is built on the existing reality and cultural context of a people: ajo and esusu in Nigeria.
As customers commit to saving, their discipline and trust in CDcare is directly converted into product ownership, allowing them to own what they want without stress. Today, thousands of users across Nigeria rely on the platform to make planned, stress-free payments that help them own their desired gadgets and appliances without stress.
Beyond the cultural fit, automating recurring payments supported CDcare’s capacity to stabilize customers’ contribution cycles and reduce drop-offs associated with manual errors or system glitches. “CDcare is for people who are patient and want to own responsibly. Flutterwave helps us reward that kind of patience and discipline by making payments seamless, automatic, and stress-free,” said Odukoya Oluwatobi, Co-Founder and CEO, CDcare.
“What we started for people to own basic electronics has evolved into a platform that powers bigger dreams, helping customers own cars, grow their businesses without being in debt. And we are not done yet.” he added.
