Our vision at Flutterwave is to make it easier for Africans to build global businesses that can make and accept payments, anywhere around the world. We believe African businesses should have the resources and solutions to seamlessly serve their customers wherever they are in the world. Today, we have taken another giant step towards achieving our vision. We are excited to announce that we have secured the Payment Systems Operator (PSO) License from the Bank of Uganda.Â
This significant milestone marks a pivotal moment for us as we continue to expand our payment solutions across Africa. Ugandan businesses will now have access to our suite of payment solutions, enabling them to collect payments from their customers in their preferred payment method. Also, businesses in Uganda can now easily make single and bulk payouts to their suppliers, employees, business partners etc.
The Payment Systems Operator license also empowers us, in partnership with other licensed players to allow Ugandans in the diaspora to easily send money to their loved ones back home.
Receiving this license shows we are committed to complying with all applicable laws and regulations in Uganda. We are grateful to the Bank of Uganda for their trust and vote of confidence in our ability to contribute to the growth and development of Uganda’s digital payments ecosystem.
Why Flutterwave Is Betting On Uganda
Flutterwave has been a key player in Africa’s fintech revolution, providing innovative payment solutions to businesses and individuals across the continent. Our PSO license positions us to significantly impact Uganda’s rapidly growing digital payments space.
Uganda has witnessed remarkable growth in its digital economy, led by increasing internet penetration and smartphone adoption. With a population of over 47 million, Uganda boasts a vibrant digital landscape, offering immense potential for businesses and consumers. According to recent data from DataReportal, internet penetration in Uganda has steadily risen, recording a 10.3% growth rate in the last year, with over 27% of the population connected to the internet. This growth is fueled by advancements in mobile technology and affordable internet plans.
Additionally, the country’s mobile money adoption rate is among the highest in Africa, with over 54% of the population owning a mobile money account. According to Statista, Uganda had over 34 million registered mobile money accounts in 2022.
Furthermore, Uganda is one of Africa’s top recipients of remittance inflows, receiving about $1.1 billion in 2021, as reported by Uganda’s National Financial Inclusion Strategy (2023-2028). Over 874,000 Ugandans reside outside the country and remittance inflows have been increasing steadily over the past 20 years.Â
