If you are planning an international trip this summer, one of the first hurdles you will need to go through is the visa application process. While applying for a visa can seem difficult, with the right preparation and know-how, you can sail through it with ease.
To help you understand the process better, we spoke with two friends, Victoria and Joshua, who had very different experiences with their Schengen visa applications. Let’s dive into their experiences and see what we can learn from them.
Understanding the Challenges
What was the most challenging part of your application process?
Victoria: The financial requirements were the most challenging for me. I wasn’t sure how much money I needed to show in my account.
Joshua: For me, it was managing all the paperwork. It felt like a never-ending list of documents.
Speaking of documents, which ones were crucial for your application?
Joshua: My bank statements were super important. Also, my employment letter and a detailed travel itinerary really helped.
Victoria: I wish I would have known that. I didn’t put much effort into my itinerary, and I think that hurt my application.
Interesting. Joshua, any tips for the visa interview?
Joshua: Be confident and honest. I made sure to know my itinerary inside out. Oh, and I dressed nicely – first impressions count.
Victoria: That’s good advice. I was so nervous during my interview and it even felt like a recital at a point, I think it showed.
How long did the entire process take for each of you?
Victoria: It took me about three weeks from submission to getting the rejection.
Joshua: For me, it was about a month, including gathering all the documents. The actual processing was around two weeks.
Was there anything that surprised you about the process?
Joshua: I was surprised by how thorough they were. They called my employer to verify my employment letter.
Victoria: I was shocked that they rejected my application especially because I didn’t have any bad intentions. I really thought I had a good chance.
Victoria, what do you think led to your rejection?
Victoria: Looking back, I think my bank statements weren’t strong enough, and as I mentioned, my travel plans were quite vague. I also didn’t have travel insurance, which I later learned was important.
Joshua, how did you ensure your application was strong?
Joshua: I made sure my bank account had a healthy balance for several months before applying. I also created a detailed day-by-day itinerary and included all my hotel bookings. Plus, I got a comprehensive travel insurance policy.
That’s really helpful. What advice would you both give to first-time applicants?
Victoria: Don’t underestimate any part of the application. Every detail matters. And definitely get help if you are unsure about anything.
Joshua: I agree. I would add that starting early is key. It gives you time to gather everything without stress. Oh, and use a checklist. It was a lifesaver for me.
Thank you both for sharing your experiences. Victoria, are you planning to apply again?
Victoria: Absolutely! I have learned a lot from this experience, and I am determined to make my next application successful especially now that I have a Travel Guide that offers a special discount for first transfer on Send App, it is going to be an adventurous summer season.
