I had designed a pair of blue denim trousers that I was on the fence about selling, but I decided to share it on my instagram page, because why not? As I usually do, I added the price, available sizes, and delivery timeline in the caption. I should add that I had only 5 pair of the denim trousers sitting in my workshop, but I forgot to add that information #slowday
Fast forward an hour later, I had 20 orders come in via whatsapp, and most of my regular customers had already paid the money into my account. Woah. I went into full panic mode.
When the credit alerts eventually slowed down, I counted 25 orders and payments. #wahala.
I had two options:
- Pick the first 5 customers who paid and schedule the trousers to be delivered to each of themOR
- Send a private apology to everyone who paid, tell them the item was no longer available and that their money would be refunded to their accounts. Ouch.

I went with the second option, and it was hell. I said the words ‘I’m sorry’ so many times I stopped counting after a while. Also, watching all that money leave my account broke my heart.
After putting out that horrible fire, I went on twitter to share my experience – even though selling on instagram has been great for me in the past year, I needed a better way to show my customers what items I had in stock and what was no longer available – not too much to ask for, right?
